Well, Damn! by The New Citizen Kane

Our Rating 7/10

Bright, unapologetic and built for movement, Well, Damn!, the new EP from London-based artist The New Citizen Kane, arrives like a burst of colour just as we exit the winter months. Leaning confidently into glossy electronic pop and disco textures, the release pairs shimmering synth lines with the emotional storytelling that has become a hallmark of Kane’s work.

The title track sets the tone immediately. Well, Damn! pulses with retro dancefloor energy while maintaining a modern electronic sheen, blending nostalgia with a sense of playful momentum. Kane’s vocal delivery keeps the track grounded in feeling, ensuring the production never overwhelms the emotional core of the song.

Elsewhere, the EP revisits familiar territory with a refreshed perspective. A synthwave reworking of fan favourite Could Have Been adds a cinematic sweep to the original, while the extended version of Subconscious (Primordial Radio Mix) allows the track’s hypnotic groove to fully unfold, stretching its atmosphere into club ready territory.

The EP also nods playfully to pop history with disco-tinged covers of Samantha Mumba’s “Gotta Tell You” and a rather fantastic take on Kylie Minogue’s “Story.” Kane makes the latter entirely his own, transforming it into something that already sounds destined for late-night dancefloors, while new track “Holding On” leans fully into the artist’s clear love of shimmering dancefloor pop.

Following the ambitious storytelling of The Tales Of Morpheus, Well, Damn! feels lighter, brighter and deliberately joyful. And frankly, in these dark political times, a little joy and fun is no small thing. Sometimes music simply needs to lift the mood. This EP does exactly that.
