Chubby Cat – “Grace”

Our Rating 8/10

Some songs arrive loudly. Others move quietly, like someone stepping into a room and simply standing there until everyone notices. “Grace”, the new single from Irish alt-pop artist Chubby Cat, belongs firmly in the second category.

Built around a sparse electronic foundation, the track leans into atmosphere rather than immediacy. Soft synth tones drift beneath the vocal, creating a sense of open space that gives the song its emotional weight. Nothing feels rushed. The production breathes, allowing the song to unfold at its own pace. Her voice rises and rises, gathering intensity without ever tipping into excess. At points, it feels almost theatrical, carrying the kind of emotional sweep that could sit just as naturally on a stage as in a late-night live set.

Chubby Cat’s voice sits at the centre of that liminal space. There is a calm confidence in the delivery, but also a fragile edge that keeps the song grounded in something deeply human. Rather than relying on oversized vocal tricks, she lets the emotion surface through smaller details, subtle shifts in tone, moments where the vocal feels almost conversational.

“Grace” is not a song that begs for attention. It earns it slowly. There is restraint here, but also conviction. That balance gives the track its real strength. It trusts the listener enough not to over-explain itself, and in doing so creates something intimate, poised and quietly affecting.

By the end, “Grace” feels less like a performance and more like a presence lingering in the room after the music stops. Chubby Cat has made something understated but powerful, the sort of track that does not need to shout to leave its mark.

Chubby Cat commented on her Instagram that Grace was “written with @ciaranlavery & @madweird ,
a song I’ve been holding close to my chest for the last few years; it’s finally time to let her out for you all to hear and the stunning artwork done by one of my favourite people and Artists @eimearnicartist “

“Grace” unfolds slowly. Layers emerge and recede without ever overwhelming the core of the song, giving the track a reflective, almost meditative quality. It feels less like a conventional pop structure and more like an emotional landscape revealed piece by piece. In that sense, it circles back to the theatrical thread running through the song, something that could live just as comfortably on a stage as it does through a pair of headphones.

What makes the track compelling is its restraint. Many artists chase the dramatic moment, the explosive chorus, the hook that demands attention. Chubby Cat moves in the opposite direction. She builds a mood and trusts the listener to meet the song where it lives.

The result is something both intimate and expansive at once. “Grace” is not trying to dominate the room. It simply fills it, gently but completely, wherever you happen to encounter it.

In a musical climate that often rewards excess and immediacy, that kind of quiet confidence can become the most striking sound of all.
