Jessica Willis Fisher – The Cavalier

There is something immediately refreshing about a folk song that arrives with an actual story to tell.

On “The Cavalier”, Jessica Willis Fisher leans wholeheartedly into the old narrative tradition of folk music, giving us characters, consequences and a cautionary tale wrapped inside a track energetic enough to disguise just how much is going on beneath it.

The premise is wonderfully old-fashioned. A cavalier returns home bearing gifts, only to discover that the things he traded away on his travels were precisely the things by which those closest to him recognised him.

It could easily have become twee. It doesn’t.

Instead, Willis Fisher uses the tale to ask a rather modern question: how much of ourselves can we surrender, alter or exchange before we become unrecognisable, not only to other people, but perhaps to ourselves?

There is wit in the writing, but also a darker thread running underneath it. Identity, belonging and the compromises we make in pursuit of whatever we think waits for us elsewhere are all tucked inside what initially feels like a rollicking folk adventure.

Produced in collaboration with Irish musician David Howley, “The Cavalier” also feels like a deliberate statement of intent for Willis Fisher’s forthcoming 11-track folk album. The arrangement has movement and urgency, while her fiddle playing and vocal delivery keep the song rooted in the storytelling rather than allowing the production to overwhelm it.

That balance is important. Folk music has never needed to be preserved behind glass. Its strength has always been its ability to take very old forms and use them to say something about the people living now.

Willis Fisher understands that.

“The Cavalier” is lively, intelligent and deceptively thoughtful. Most importantly, it leaves you wanting to hear where the story goes next. Also worth checking out her new single that just dropped back to back with this one! But thats not all, “Wait For My Signal”, is also out now. Phew we can’t keep up with her!

The Cavalier (and Wait For My Signal) are out now via Bard Craft Records.

Our Rating 10/10 flawless.
