Filmed across Ravensdale and the coastline surrounding Balbriggan Lighthouse and beach, the video places Sonaírí’s classical interpretation of one of Coldplay’s best-known songs against some striking Irish landscapes.

The film opens in woodland, with the pair dressed in white. There is something almost theatrical about those first scenes, a touch of Phantom of the Opera in the stillness and formality of the imagery, before the video gradually moves out of the darkness of the trees and towards the open coastline.

That transition works particularly well with “Fix You”. A song built around consolation, grief, hope and the instinct to help somebody through their darkest moments is given room to breathe against the changing landscape.

Later scenes bring the pair to Balbriggan beach and lighthouse, standing back-to-back beside the sea as the horizon opens behind them. Rather than attempting to recreate the imagery associated with Coldplay’s original, Sonaírí have built a visual world around their own interpretation of the song.

Shot by Sky Lark Fotos (@skylarkfotos), the video has an understated, cinematic quality. The white dress and shirt worn throughout become particularly effective as the surroundings change from deep green woodland to the softer blues and greys of the Irish coast.

The track itself was produced and recorded by WL Studios, with Sonaírí taking the familiar emotional core of “Fix You” and bringing it into their own classical crossover world.

It is a difficult thing to cover a song this recognisable. The original carries more than two decades of memories for listeners, so there is little point in simply reproducing it. Sonaírí instead approach it through their own musical language, allowing the vocal performances and classical arrangement to carry the song somewhere quieter and more intimate.

The accompanying video completes that interpretation beautifully. There are no elaborate sets or visual distractions. Instead, the landscape, the performers and the music are allowed to do the work.

For an Irish duo developing their own place within contemporary classical crossover, it also feels fitting that the visual identity of the release is rooted so firmly at home. These are definitely an act to watch out for. Simply sublime.
