ALBUM OF THE WEEK

MORGANA – THE WHOLE THING WAS VERY VERY EMOTIONAL

Our Rating 5/5

There comes a point in an artist’s career where reinvention stops being a risk and becomes a necessity. With The Whole Thing Was Very Very Emotional, Morgana embraces that moment wholeheartedly, delivering a debut solo album that feels confident, expansive and entirely her own.

Having first come to prominence as one half of Saint Sister, Morgana steps confidently into a different musical world here. While traces of her gift for melody remain, the delicate folk textures of her previous work give way to shimmering synths, richer production and a bold pop sensibility that allows her songwriting to breathe in new ways.

At its heart, this is an album about emotion in all its contradictions. It explores relationships, identity, longing, friendship and self-discovery without ever pretending that life neatly resolves itself. Instead, Morgana allows complexity to exist, embracing vulnerability without losing sight of joy, humour or hope.

What makes the record particularly compelling is its balance. Grand, cinematic moments sit comfortably alongside quieter, more intimate songs, creating an album that feels cohesive while constantly evolving. Every track serves the wider narrative, drawing the listener through an emotional landscape that feels deeply personal yet widely relatable.

Vocally, Morgana is exceptional. Her voice moves effortlessly between restraint and power, carrying each song with confidence while never overshadowing the writing itself. It is a performance built on nuance rather than excess, allowing the emotional core of the record to remain firmly in focus.

The production deserves equal praise. Rich without becoming cluttered, ambitious without sacrificing clarity, it provides the perfect setting for Morgana’s songwriting to flourish. Each arrangement feels considered, adding colour and atmosphere while keeping the songs themselves at the forefront.

Perhaps the album’s greatest achievement is its sense of artistic conviction. Rather than chasing trends or attempting to recreate past successes, Morgana has created a body of work that feels unmistakably authentic. It is the sound of an artist trusting her instincts and allowing herself the freedom to grow.

Debut solo albums often feel like introductions. The Whole Thing Was Very Very Emotional feels more like a statement of intent. It announces Morgana as an artist with a clear creative vision and the confidence to follow it wherever it leads.

Beautifully written, thoughtfully produced and emotionally generous, this is one of the strongest Irish albums of the year.
