Our Rating 4/5
Irish indie-rock quartet Florence Road have spent the past year building considerable momentum, but their latest single, Wish Upon You, suggests something more interesting than another step towards commercial success. It reveals a band willing to embrace happiness without feeling obliged to complicate it.
For a generation of alternative artists whose songwriting often centres on emotional uncertainty, romantic disappointment and the inevitable collapse of relationships, there is something refreshing about a love song that simply allows itself to be happy.
The Bray four-piece, fronted by Lily Aron, approach Wish Upon You with a sense of openness that feels central to their developing identity. Beginning with piano before expanding into a fuller band arrangement, the track brings together layered guitars, driving percussion and increasingly prominent harmonies.
Aron’s voice remains the focal point. Expressive and capable of considerable power, her delivery gives the song its emotional direction without losing the immediacy that has become an important part of Florence Road’s appeal.
The band’s decision to write about uncomplicated affection is perhaps the most interesting aspect of the release. There is no elaborate emotional reckoning, no attempt to disguise vulnerability beneath cynicism. Instead, the song explores the simple pleasure of being with somebody who makes life feel easier.
Musically, Florence Road continue to operate within a recognisable contemporary indie-rock framework. Their strength lies less in reinventing that sound than in understanding how melody, vocal character and collective energy can give familiar structures a distinct personality.
Following an increasingly busy international touring schedule, Wish Upon You arrives at an important stage in the band’s development.
The challenge now will be ensuring that the considerable attention surrounding them translates into a lasting catalogue rather than a collection of successful moments.
On the evidence of their songwriting direction, Florence Road appear to understand that distinction.
Wish Upon You is an encouraging reminder that optimism, when delivered without pretence, can be every bit as compelling as heartbreak.
